Frequently asked questions.

Direct answers on accreditation, training and how we work.

What is security accreditation for NATO and EU classified systems?

Security accreditation is the formal authorisation that allows a system handling classified information to operate. For NATO and EU classified systems it verifies, through documented security requirements, risk assessment and security operating procedures, that the system protects information up to its classification level. Without accreditation, a classified system cannot enter service.

Who can accredit a NATO or EU classified system?

Accreditation is granted by the competent Security Accreditation Authority: a national security authority or, for NATO and EU bodies, the relevant institutional authority. Consultancies do not grant accreditation. Oltre-CSD prepares the complete security documentation and guides the system through the process, up to the authority's decision.

What is NATO Federated Mission Networking (FMN)?

Federated Mission Networking is the NATO framework that allows allied nations and partners to interconnect their mission networks and share information during operations. Every participating network must meet common security requirements and be accredited for federation. Oltre-CSD has specific competence in producing the security documentation required for FMN participation.

What documentation is required to accredit a classified system?

Each accreditation framework defines its own documentation set: the required documents depend on the framework, the classification level and the competent authority. Typical sets include a system description, a security risk assessment, security requirement statements and security operating procedures. Oltre-CSD produces the complete set required by the applicable framework.

How long does a security accreditation process take?

The duration depends on the complexity of the system, its classification level and the competent authority's process. The part a consultancy can control is the quality of the submission: complete and consistent documentation reduces review iterations, which is where most delays occur.

Where is Oltre-CSD based and where does it operate?

Oltre-CSD is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, and works across the European Union and NATO member states, with on-site operational support in Belgium and abroad.

Does Oltre-CSD hold a Facility Security Clearance?

Not yet. Oltre-CSD is in the final stage of obtaining Facility Security Clearance at NATO SECRET and EU SECRET level. This answer will be updated as soon as the clearance is granted.

Which sectors does Oltre-CSD serve?

European and international institutions, defence organisations, space programmes and operators of critical infrastructure: environments where systems are classified, highly critical or mission critical.

What is ground segment security?

The ground segment is everything on Earth that operates a space mission: control centres, ground stations and the networks connecting them to the spacecraft. Ground segment security protects satellite command, control and communication infrastructure from cyber threats. Oltre-CSD brings more than ten years of experience in this field.

What training programmes does Oltre-CSD offer?

Six specialist programmes in counter intelligence and risk management for organisations operating in highly critical contexts: insider threat analysis and mitigation, risk assessment in classified environments, information protection and compartmentalisation, operational and strategic risk management, security accreditation for classified systems, and regulatory compliance. Additional programmes can be delivered on client request.

How much does a training programme cost and how is it delivered?

Each programme costs EUR 8,000 and runs for 40 hours over five working days. Delivery can be remote, on site or hybrid; remote delivery allows unlimited participants.

Who should attend the counter intelligence and risk management programmes?

Security officers, programme and risk managers, and personnel operating in classified or highly critical environments across institutions, defence and industry.
